As I understand it, the intermediate diet is a short hearing to see if everything is set for a trial (or indeed to find if the plea has been changed to guilty to avoid the need for a trial) otherwise you could arrive at court ready for a half day trial and it be adjourned for some reason. This hearing on friday checks that everything is in place (such as the prosecution serving evidence requested by the defence) We have hearings like that in England, we call them Plea and Direction hearings, which I suppose explains the reasons better than an 'Intermediate Diet'.
