Court…scared

Convicted Driver Insurance
Tomorrow.
I’m bricking it.
I’m dreading the press, the impact on my work etc etc. But, I did it, so just got to accept what’s coming.
I hope it goes as well as it can.

We all make mistakes, this one does not need to define you. Be strong :)

Please try not to worry….I was suicidal and reached out to Samaritans and phoned the NHS helpline.
I found this forum and everyone said I’d get through it but I didn't believe I would but after court and now I’ve been in the press the anxiety is lessening…I’m still burning with shame and hope in a way that feeling never leaves me.
When you go court make sure you keep your hood up and cover your face.
What was your charge?
You WILL get through this and be a stronger person for it.

Failure to provide a specimen, but I caused damage to other vehicles, had a child in the car and blew 135 at roadside.
I’m so terribly ashamed of myself.

The only thing to do is to try to get through this and use it as an extremely valuable lesson.

Thank you for your kind words.

You made a mistake and the fact you are ashamed shows you aren’t a bad person…you just made a mistake, and the only crime is if you don’t learn from it.
The worse thing that could have happened would be if you had hurt someone, but you didn’t!!
People will see the remorse you feel and you’ll find that people will be worried about you.
I know what we’ve done is extremely shameful and we will live with the regret, probably for the rest of our lives, but we can’t best ourselves up forever…no one can punish us the way we punish ourselves.
When court is over you can start to move forward .
Take each day at a time.
Thousands of people have made the mistake we’ve made…you aren’t alone.
Good luck for tomorrow…I believe the reporters can only take pics of you going in court .
Remember, hood up, fave covered and keep your head down until you are in the building. Don’t let anyone distract you. Sometimes they shout out so you look up.
Do you have a solicitor?

Thought I’d come back and update.

I thought the judge was really lenient considering what I’d done. I got a 16 month ban and a £420 fine.
The press were in the court, so I’m expecting to appear there as well.

My face is still burning with shame, but I’m glad that part is over with.

You got incredibly lucky there! Onwards and upwards 😁

Wow, super-lenient! you clearly represented yourself very well. Hopefully you can put it behind you now :)

Thank you for letting us know.
Have you informed your works?
Glad that ordeal is over for you.
Will you get your ban reduced with course or is that with the course taken in account?

My employers are aware and have been supportive. I’ve been with them for many years and this is the first blemish on my record. However, due to the nature of my work, I’m registered with a professional body. I did disclose to them the day after my arrest. There will need to be a hearing to decide what happens then. If they decide to remove me from the register, then unfortunately my employers will have no choice but to dismiss me. I’m hoping I get a warning, but I will need to wait and see.

Regarding the ban, I wasn’t given the option to reduce it, and I probably wouldn’t anyway. I’m not sure how I’d afford the insurance after this!

I’m not sure how much insurance goes up by.

I did some research a while back and found that broadly premiums increased by about 40% with a drink drive conviction.
I checked this by logging into Comparethemarket.com, putting in all the correct details, with no convictions, then going back and inserting a DR10 disqualification.
If you do it any other way, such as comparing what it was before you were banned, you run the risk of things have also changed that affects the quote, like different car, different postcode, how long you have been driving etc.
There are some insurance companies that will not give you insurance for 5 years with a drink drive conviction, such as NFU Mutual, even if you were with them before.

Thank you so much for taking the time write back. Very much appreciated.
I’ll most probably go through a specialised company when time comes.

Hello,
If the sentence includes a fine can this be paid on the day in court or do they then send you a letter with the fine listed on it?
Thanks

You can usually pay on the day at the court office, but often there is a nominal “7days to pay” agreed.
If the full amount is difficult then the fine can be paid in instalments (no interest added!) to be agreed at the court hearing.
You are given a ‘means test form’ to fill in at court to assess your income and ability to pay a fine.

Holy moley, that's a storming result taking into account the circumstances. You must be pleased with that (I mean as pleased as you can be all things considered).

Personally, after my 15 mins in court, I felt a whole weight had been lifted and since then it has been a case of just getting on with it. Hopefully you can start to move on too.

So do they give you a letter straight away in the court to take to the fine office on the day?
