What do I tell the insurance company following a ban?

My son just got 12 month ban, reduced to 9 with the course. Wants to keep the car (he'll SORN it and keep it on the drive) til he gets his licence back - if he can afford the insurance! Question is, what should he tell his current insurers now? Should he just cancel the policy, giving no reason and then (obviously) once he gets his licence back and starts looking for quotes he declares it then, or is he legally bound to tell them now and they cancel/void his policy?

This depends on the terms of the policy and is not something I can specifically advise on but the likelihood is that cancelling the policy would have to circumvent the need to inform your insurers. I would advise considering your policy terms first and checking the position with a civil lawyer given that my expertise relates to criminal. As you point out, your son would need to declare this when he gets insurance in future so I am unsure if there is any merit in not telling your current insurers.
