Convicted Driver Insurance

Hi all,

I posted on here back in July with a whole bunch of questions - to which I received much appreciated advice from some people. Here is just an update on those things to clear up the rights and wrongs for people wanting to know the same things, and also a couple more questions, if you don't mind!

See the original post here: https://www.forum.drinkdriving.org/threads/dr30-re-test.116460/#post-138404

or, in brief;
I held my car licence for 15 months, and my Class C (LGV) for 5/6 months, when I was convicted for Failure To Supply (DR30).
I was dead-set that I would have to re-sit both tests.

Well, I have my DVLA medical coming up on the 19th November and providing everything is a GO, I will receive my car licence back on the 4th of December! The best part? I am due to automatically receive my LGV licence back 5 weeks from that date, which I believe to be 8th January 2020.

Basically I received a letter from the Traffic Commissioner stating that there are huge responsibilities involved with holding a valid LGV licence and driving one, and that he/she is to recommend that I have only my car licence for the first 5 weeks. I had the option to either write to them to appeal, or sit down with them face to face to fight my corner to attain the lgv licence back earlier. I chose the 3rd option and accepted the 5 week 'delay', mainly because I have been out of the country for the best part of the last 12 months, but also partly because their recommendation is otherwise correct. Maybe not in my case, as I have still been driving 50+ ton trucks since my disqualification on private properties (such as shipyards, windfarms etc.) so still feel very comfortable behind the wheel.

I took a CDT test recently in North America, where I have been working for the past 10 weeks. Luckily I fly back to the UK 2 days before my 6 week deadline for the medical, so that's all booked in, i'm just praying for no delays with my flights back. My result from the CDT test were 0.8% which is understandable, I've had a couple of beers here and there. I will have abstained alcohol for a further 21 days from this test, so around 30 days in total since the blood was taken up until the DVLA test. The problem is, I have been to the doctors once in the past year, for a referral to a specialist as I tore my UCL in my thumb at work. It was a new GP as I hadn't had a doctors appointment in around 5 years prior. I have never had any alcohol related issues in my life, even more so there will be no record of alcohol abuse in my doctors notes (if they have any notes)
My worry is the lack of doctors appointments I have ever had. How will this affect me?

Also, I may be jumping the gun but I have been looking into some van insurance. Does anybody have any recommendations for me? It's a 2017 Ford Ranger, so quite a large vehicle to say I only had my licence 15 month prior, I was paying around £1400/year before my conviction. I can't seem to find any DR30 specialist insurance/brokers for van insurance, and I'm hoping someone can shed some light on it for me. I'm preparing for the worst but definitely hoping for the best. This could get expensive..

Which does also bring me on to my last question! I've been doing some quote checking on comparethemarket/confused.com etc, and this question has me a little confused: How long has the licence been held? Now, is this the date from when I receive my licence back from disqualification, or the date from when I first passed my car test?

Just noticed how long winded my post is, sorry! If you made it this far, I look forward to your reply.

Also if it is of any interest to anyone, here is what my CDT results taken in America stated, which seems to give different parameters to what we have in the UK.

"
Result: 0.8%

Normal <1.4
Inconclusive 1.4 - 1.6
Elevated >1.6
Clinical use only. Not specific for medico-legal purposes.
.
This test is not suitable for the evaluation of patients suspected of having congenital glycosylation disorders.

A Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin (CDT) result <1.4% is considered to be normal and is consistent with low or no alcohol use during the previous two weeks.

Well fantastic news Ranger regarding both licence, you will be back on your feet in no time,
Regarding your GP appointments it's not such a big deal if your non dependant or misuse! However the dvla are getting more anal but this should not affect your licence's just tick all the correct boxes # I enjoyed reading your post your definitely someone that cares!
Is there anyone you can be added to insurance* I pay 230 pnds a year with my DUI just to be added to my wife's insurance so any partners /parents/family/freinds

Hey Craig as you know I am waiting for my D1 to be issued what happens with my D2 from here on in and the traffic commissioner?

The Commissioner will contact you roughly same time as your ordinary licence is granted via letter, it will state you need a period of time to prove your worthiness to drive, you can challenge there decision if you need the licence quicker but another 6 weeks is nothing considering

I too have just reapplied for my licence and have been to see the traffic commissioner about my hgv class one licence. I get my car licence back in january, and the traffic commissioner has said that I can have my hgv class one back in april.

It is the date from when your first passed your test.

Thanks for the reply! Never been dependant or a misuser so fingers crossed it is an easy process. I can only use my own insurance unfortunately so looks like i'll just have to foot the bill.

Another question for everyone;

When I receive my licence back, will i have to then send it off after 5 weeks for them to put my LGV part back on?

Thanks

Hi Ranger,

As there is now no longer a paper counterpart, you don’t need to send back your license to the DVLA as everything is done electronically.

Hi Craig another question for you mate, if issued a temporary licence say 1 year will I have to continue LFT tests or do I just attend the medical at the end of the year? This year now have supplied 4.....

It's best you continue with LFT tests this will help satisfy your GP whom might if prompted add a rather nice letter(mine did)if theve asked for absitenance don't admit to a drop! If it's controlled drinking never exceed 8 units (guidelines are lower for hgv#so don't regular either

Do you mind me asking Craig are you HRO ,misuse or dependant ?

Was labeled dependant had normal licence 1 year and HGV revoked for 3 years, between 2013/16 I spent 3 years @ GP every 3 months taking LFT and was granted a full licence 2016 on the back of that I believe then 1 month latter I did the most stupid thing and done a DUI 16mth minus 4 months for course
Was very fortunate to get my license back then my job but I just kept on putting in LFT
PS I believe the dvla are now stating if you are done with dependancy your not allowed alcohol in the future ever!
I did the crime an served my time! But it's a lot harder getting your licence back now since the Glasgow bin lorry incident

Thanks for your reply mate are you on a temporary licence now?

Yes, these are tests you have with your own doctor "liver function test" you can ask for one they are free and they check to see if there's any inflammation or damage from consuming alcohol.....they can also pick up on other things not related to alcohol,,,,
