Hi,
I’ve received this today and I’m a bit confused about the last point, I was disqualified as a HRO in 2024 but I’ve since had a 1 year licence and I’m waiting for my 2nd to be reviewed- nothing has changed since last time, but can I drive on Sec 88 with the last point saying that?? I meet the rest of the criteria (I might just be being thick btw)

Yes your ok to drive on 88 don't worry ✌️

What does that last point mean though? Am I just reading it wrong? Thanks for the reply
I agree. It is confusing. What I THINK it means is that if you are HRO after June 1st 2013 and you are applying for the return of your licence for the first time, you cannot drive under Section 88 until it has been re-issued by the DVLA.

You were given a 1 year licence (I had 3 of them) and when you applied for a renewal, because you had already held a licence, you are entitled to drive under Section 88.

At least that's how I understood it when I was in your position, but I have no recollection of receiving this document.

Thank you, yeah that’s what I thought as I’m not actually classed as HRO anymore am I. Why do the make things so confusing, never straight forward is it!

Correct. You have a medical licence, not a full licence. It took me 3 years to get a full licence, but the DVLA can keep this going for 6 years (and probably more if they want to.)

Il be causing murder if it goes on for longer than 3! That would be 4 years sober 😡

Get your GP onside. Tell him how you are dealing with your alcohol addiction abstinence, AA, Hospital Detox etc. If you speak to them truthfully and calmly, your GP can influence the DVLA decision depending on how he completes the questionnaire and what he reports to .them in any additional text.

Just a quick question, this is on the gov website and even though it’s for a year it says a full licence is this correct or should it say medical licence?

I'm northern ireland. On nidirect it says ive full license even though it's a 1 year license. I'm also going through renewal process since Feb 14th. Mine is now expired March 27th but have the letter saying can drive while being assessed. I was wondering if we have to inform insurance company I'd driving under sec 88?

Hi,
I really don’t know, I’m hoping to get mine back before mine runs out the end of May, my insurance and licence run out at the same time. If you find out though please let me know incase I don’t get mine in time. This is my first time renewing so I’m also new to all this

It is a full licence, but as it is only for a year, the DVLA Medical Team will write to you around 90 days before your renewal date telling you that you will need to go for another medical and that they will also need to contact your GP.

I can guarrantee that you will not have a new 1, 3 or 10 year licence in your hands before your current licence expires, but you can drive under Section 88 (all things being as they were before.) I had to do this 3 times.

The DVLA can issue a 1 year licence for around 6 years if they deem it medically necessary.

Did you have to go for a CDT test 3 times too?

Sorry I'm late in replying. Yes, I did need to have a CDT tes, but the blood sample was drawn by the Doctor at the exam. I didn't have to go anywhere to get it.
Oh ok, I don’t have to actually see my doctor they have just sent him the questionnaire? Wonder if il still need one

Did you go to a DVLA approved Doctor for an examination? If you are HRO, then that is what should happen. All your own GP will do is answer the questions on the form as best they can then return it to DVLA. Your GP might contact you to discuss the form with you (mine did the last time, and I think between us we convinced the DVLA that I was no longer a DD threat.

But you will have an examination by an external DVLA Doctor until you get a full, non medical licence.

GP has sent all the info back and apparently I don’t need to see an external DVLA doctor, they just go off the doctors form now unless anything has changed from last time according to the call agent from DVLA. I’m sure I read last year in the minutes that they were cutting down on the CDT tests for renewals as it was too expensive, but you never know them il prob get a letter saying I need one 😂

Hi there was for a few posts I remember reading from forum members saying the same thing 🙏

Got my new licence today, only another 1 year one but I’m grateful I’ve got one.
I’d say super quick time too, 8 weeks from start to finish and my GP took up 3 of them weeks waiting for him to complete the form and send it back. Anyway no blood test just the form completed by the GP and no driving on Sec 88, hopefully next year will be my year for a full 10 year one 🤞🏼
