Please can someone explain what a pre sentence report is and how the report is used by the court?

The pre sentence report is compiled by a probation officer after you have been interviewed.
The officer assesses your level of remorse, the impact of the offence on you and others and your ability to carry out community work as a form of punishment and if you need alcohol counselling or ongoing supervision meetings with the probation service.
A PSR can requested by the court if your reading is between 60-119 and they are considering a community penalty. If your reading is 120 or above, it is also used as a part of the process to decide if you should be sent to prison rather than receive a community penalty, but that is never a recommendation from the Probation service. If however, tha Magistrates decide that from the report they do not think you would respond to a community penalty then they can decide themselves that prison is more appropriate. (Or that a prison sentence is imposed but they suspend it)
