Medical before the DVLA contact your gp or the other way around?

Does anyone know if the process is now that they contact your gp THEN you have the medical?

I thought it was the other way around, however I’ve noticed a few people saying that the have attended the medical once the gp has returned his/her completed form.

Or does it vary from case to case?

It can happen either way. First time I applied for my driving licence at the end of my drink driving ban, I did the DVLA medical then they wrote to my GP. A year later, I re-applied at the end of my temporary licence and they wrote to the GP before I did my DVLA medical.

I reckon this time of year, in the lead up to Christmas, they probably write to your gp first so that if anybody did want to have a glass of something at Christmas (not me), they can’t, as they know they’ve got the medical coming up.

I wouldn’t put it past them!

It doesn’t make a difference whatever part of the year it is. If they dragged it out throughout the summer months, you could argue you can’t enjoy a cold beer at a bbq.

No none. I'm not sure, unless you are in the system already for dependence, that it's not completely random.
The whole process was pretty efficient with me, my license was back 2 weeks after it would have been issued without being hro.

Same as CJ, first time around, medical then GP, after 1 year licence, GP then medical

Do you have to pay a fee to reapply for your temporary license after a year and so on? Or do they automatically renew it without you having to pay again to reissue license?

I know you’d have to pay the first time reapplying after Hro.

I'm the same as these guys.

My GP surgery actually contacted me (totally out of the blue) about three weeks before my DVLA medical to invite me in for an LFT. Said it would be good evidence for my application.

Is it better to put your completely teetotal when you fill out how many units your drink on the Hro medical form?

If your CDT result or any GP response contradicts your statement that you are teetotal then you are opening a big can of trouble for yourself. Saying you are teetotal and then being shown to be a liar will no doubt make DVLA presume you have lied about everything and go further in depth to uncover the truths......

Once you have been back on the road for at least one year under a temporary licence, you do not have to pay any additional costs. However, please be mindful that if you are revoked or refused for whatever reason, you will have to pay again to go through the medical process. It is in your own interest to ensure you pass each medical you do.

Agreed. All lft’s are within normal range and I’m certain my cdt will come back fine. It came back 0.4 when I got my license back in 2021. However unfortunately I decided I was invisible again in 2022. Both times I was parked up, not driving because I knew I could not drive any further. I’m a hro because I failed to provide. I did try my best, blood test wasn’t offered) I have asthma/anxiety and was short of breath but not enough evidence. I did tell them I had a drink and that was the reason I was parked up however I tried my best to provide but couldn’t. I now drink 4 times a year, but I’m just worried about putting anything down at all because I’m a hro and 6 years ago I told the gp counselor how drinking affected my mental health so I don’t drink to much, I’ve had a domestic incident with an ex who SA’d me, I had to call the police out and he told them I was a binge drinker and my doctor was contacted. I denied the allegations because they were false. I just liked to have a drink on my weekends off every other weekend as most parents do when they are child free. So I’m not sure if they will look at that. I’ve seen my last doctors form my gp filled out to the dvla in 2021 (as I requested a subject access request to the dvla to see what she put down last time) she put no issues down on there then and I put down I drank 2-5 units every other weekend on the hro medical form. I’m just scared because this is now unfortunately my 2nd time being a hro but my 3rd dd(first time was 12 years ago (not hro) 2nd time 5 years ago (hro) and this time last year (hro) I really don’t find myself in the best situations and have learnt my lesson never to do this again. I’ve done the drink drive course, which took a year off and I’m hoping to write to court after serving half my ban next July. Fingers crossed with the progress I’ve made through counselling etc due to domestic abuse I won’t find my self in this position again: ultimately it’s no fault but my own.
