Company insurance with 1 year restricted licence

Convicted Driver Insurance

I'm struggling to find a company that accepts a 1 year restricted licence, I've not had my medical yet as its due in a few weeks but by the looks of things only around 5% of people are getting full 10 years licence and the other 5% are getting 1 year which is no good if you are getting a company van. (Preparation for all worst case scenarios)

Anyone shed some light on this

What are the insurance companies asking about the licence? You have been issued with a full driving licence, the only ’Temporary’ thing about it is that it is for 1 year rather than the normal 10 year one.
I am 67, so have just been issued with a 3 year licence as I will have to have a review at 70, but that isn’t a temporary one, it is a full licence, but just for 3 years......
You are normally asked “how long have you held a full licence to drive a car?” And for that you can just answer with when you passed your test. There will be a later question about points and disqualifications where they will learn about your conviction but I haven’t seen a question online that then asks how long your licence has been issued for?
you will get a problem if you say that you want the insurance to start more than about 6-8 weeks ahead, to get a quote you have to adjust your dates for the ban etc and say that you want it to start in 3-4 weeks, then you will get a quote.

My medical is due in 3 weeks so I thought I try and get quotes, worst case I tried with a 1 year licence like the ones dvla are giving to HRO'S but companies insurance won't touch them so I be buggered for a company van. Nightmare

You haven’t answered the question I posed. Where do they ask if you are on a 1 year licence and what does the question say?

You have an option when getting insurance quotes from a drop down box (1year restricted 2year 5year etc).if the dvla give me the one year as I'm predicting I'm not going to be able to get a company vehicle, I'm hoping I'm wrong here,

Insurance companies do not just presume everyone has a full 10 year licence they have to know your licence status.

Maybe you are looking at a specialist company for a company van?
On comparethemarket.com and other comparison websites they simply ask “how long have you held a full licence to drive?”
I have insured myself - obviously - my wife, children and foster children for years and I cannot recollect ever having seen a drop down box asking for how long your licence is for.......

NOTE, I have had a look round and there is completecovergroup.com where they ask you to fill in details of how long your licence has been issued for, but as a general rule the comparison websites do not ask this, and you are not asked that question, in my experience, when you click through to a company to take up the quote.

I have a 3 year licence, but that is because of my age. That does not affect my status, .... I have a full licence. That does not affect my level of risk.

Thanks price ?hopefully I got it wrong, my work have said that the insurance company will want me to fill out a questionnaire.

That is slightly different, I didn’t read from your first post that you were looking to have a company vehicle but on the companies insurance. If that is the case, They are right, you probably will have to fill out a questionnaire and that may ask how long your licence is for, but I would not see that as a stumbling block as much as your drink driving conviction and the length of the ban that went with it.

If you are looking for your own insurance then my previous comments are still valid, go through a comparison website and put business use in with the quote.

All price comparison sites ask how long your licence is, here's a screenshot of confused . com. If you hold a temporary licence due to a HRO medical you must select that you have a medical condition and inform your insurance of your temporary licence. My temp licence put my insurance up by over £150 and business insurance comes back with eye watering results.

Perhaps having a temp licence due to age does not count as a medical licence, but I was under the impression that any temp licence had to be declared to your insurance company.

Grice96, thanks for that.
I have checked my quote on comparethemarket.co, and that does appear, but only when I press yes to this question:
“Do you have any medical conditions or disabilities that are DVLA reportable?“
Now that starts another debate..... alcohol dependency IS DVLA notifiable but a drink drive conviction per se is not. It is quite possible to have a drink drive conviction and not be alcohol dependent... although I suppose it could be categorised as misuse I’d drinking 3 pints then driving has made you an offender!
All the advice on restricted licences refer to medical conditions and a drink drive conviction does not seem to fit into that category. It IS notifiable to DVLA, but by the court because of a conviction, not necessarily because of a medical conviction.

So, is a 1 year licence issued after a drink drive a medical a restricted licence? I am struggling to find an answer to that.

It may be prudent to opt to share your driving licence details with the insurance company and then you have revealed all the relevant information. All the bits I have read in .gov and DVLA advice relates to a restricted licence following a medical suspension of your driving licence, not a short term licence as a HRO.

Cheers guys , I'm under the impression that the 1year licence under HRO'S is in the restricted class but not seen any solid evidence on that yet so I could be wrong. The jury still out on that.

The 1, 2 or 3 year licence issued after a HRO medical is a medically restricted licence. They have found a medical condition namely alcohol misuse to issue a 1/2/3 year licence or dependence for a 1 year licence so it must be declared as medically restricted licence to your insurer.

I've been told by the DVLA themselves that my licence is a medically restricted licence.

The more I think about it the 1year hro licence from dvla must be classed as a restricted licence because you need to give insurance company a copy of your licence and on the licence it will state the expiry date of which is 1year.

I rang today, the difference in the quote is because my initial start date was 3 weeks away but when I rang to declare the licence the policy starting 2 days later. So the difference in time until the policy took effect effected the premium.
