Hi everyone, just looking for some positive information regarding insurance, I’m worried about how expensive it’s going to be, does anyone have recommendations? Will the drink drive course help bring it down?

I am insured using Aviva, they had no interest in the DDRS course
I don’t recall any of the companies asking me whether I’d done a DDRS course either.. I’m sure as well when I researched it the ones advised at the time by the DDRS course providers were the most likely expensive!

I must add though I did my course right at the beginning of my ban so 18 months later that could have been outdated info and not the course providers fault

I'm sure most of the DDRS providers will say it can reduce insurance. In reality, that might be limited to a handful of insurers. A bit like ADIs saying Pass Plus can reduce your insurance (didn't for me) or RoSPA telling you that their advanced driver qualification can reduce your insurance (also didn't for me)

There may be some insurance companies who give a discount for having done it, but I wouldn't get your hopes up for a significant reduction in premiums. I expect even those who do take notice of it will probably just knock a tenner or something off.

I don't have any insurance company recommendations as I'm still banned. I'll let you know in 6 months time!

Just to update on this DDRS course providers do not claim they can reduce your insurance for completing the course at all it is there to reduce your length of ban by 25% if asked for on the day of sentencing in court and is given by the courts. The main point of the course is to hopefully make sure you rehabilitate , reflect and learn from your drink driving offence and to help you understand the importance of driving with zero alcohol in your system. In the hope that you will not reoffend.

Within your course documentation they will give you a list of insurance companies/ brokers that they recommend to use for a lower insurance quote who have been convicted of a drink driving offence. personally I found them more expensive

What I did find is that mine was actually reduced quite significant recently adding another named driver on my insurance ie my partner so it may be worth trying that option too 🙏

Not all DDRS course providers list recommendations for insurers.

Mine didn't for example.

Always take recommendations with a pinch of salt as well, and don't assume that they're good recommendations. By all means get a quote from them, but shop around, get more quotes, speak to brokers etc :)
