Convicted Driver Insurance

Hi, I am posting on behalf of my brother. He’s 37, held license for 17 years.

Caught drunk driving summer 2020, I’m not sure his reading but he was very intoxicated, he had taken my mums car without consent, also crashed into 3 other (parked) vehicles during this little adventure so charged with DD but also leaving scene of accident.

He was given 20 month ban, reduced as he took the driving rehabilitation (?) course. He’s now bought himself a 1.2 corsa and is trying to insure it as his ban is now over.

He initially had a quote for £550 ish, however upon actually speaking with the insurance company that jumped to circa £2000. When he’s tried to get insurance from one of the specialist convicted driver places they quote £4000.

I think the thing that’s bumping it up is that he’s lost his 10yrs no claims. I have 8yr no claims and my mum has 20 yrs no claims - so we have considered adding him and his car to our policies (is that even a thing or is that not allowed??)

If anyone has any suggestions of particular companies he can try, or brokers he can speak to, that would be great. And if anyone has had a similar conviction please let me know if you ended up with a reasonable cost insurance or if you just had to accept paying ££££’s.

thanks!!

Can you clarify if he has actually got his. Licence back yet? Prosecuted ‘summer 2020’ 15 month ban (after the course) and if his reading was very high (more than 87) then he has to undertake a medical and this is taking months to go through…….

You can try adding him to one of your policies, but insurance companies usually rate the premium according to the highest risk, so your policy would shoot up if he was added. You cannot add a car to a policy, only a driver. There is such a thing as ‘multi car insurance’ with admiral but again his risk would still be the deciding factor in the cost……. And if you look on here you will find posts where Admiral are the main firm chasing drink drivers to pay back the claims that they have paid out for them paying out for the other vehicles and injuries caused. That would be a big risk to take as he has already been caught for it once.

I tried being added to my father's policy at the very start of getting my licence back. Adding me to his policy brought his quote up to the same price as a policy in my own name, the companies I spoke to explained the policies are quoted based on the highest risk driver, that was me. £2000 isn't far off the price for my first year post ban. I am now coming into my 4th year post ban and I am back to paying around what I was paying just before my ban, which is still high considering it is the premium I was paying at 22 years old vs 25 now.

There is no particular company that is cheaper than another, insurance changes every day. The best prices I ever get are on the price comparison sites (confused . com being the best usually) Put a quote in there with all his details and the price that comes out is the price your brother will likely have to pay. Out of all of the small cars Corsas are usually dearer to insure than other 1.2s based on crash data as they are a favoured model of young boy racers, hence those particular models end up in more crashes. When I was 17 there was over £600 in difference between a quote on a 1.2 Corsa and a 1.2 Polo.

Hi thanks for the reply - think we’ll stick to trying to find him his own policy perhaps.

He blew 82, so no medical, if that makes a difference to his status. He hasn’t specifically got his license back yet, as dvla are so delayed at the mo, but when he checks online it says ‘ban ended’ or something like that. He sent off for his license at 56 days before end of ban but hasn’t received it back yet. Does this make things more complex in terms of actually getting in the car and driving once his insurance is sorted?

Hi thanks for sharing - maybe worth him looking at other cars to try and see if that brings things down at all! His initial quote of circa 500/600 did seem a bit too good to be true.

As his ban has ended and he does not have to do a medical, then he could drive under S88 while he is waiting for his licence to be issued.
He has to meet the requirements shown here:

Ok thanks that’s helpful!

Just as an update - he contacted A Plan and they helped him get a quote for 1400 for the year, so not too terrible 👍🏼
