Convicted Driver Insurance

Hi

Does anyone have any idea if Admiral will insure a 2x convicted driver?

They insured me after my first conviction, but I'm not sure if they will take the risk again.

I am asking because I have 14 years NCD with them, but by the time I get my licence back and buy a car, it will be 28 months since that was issued. I know Admiral accept NCD's for up to 3 years and I intend going back and asking them for a quote, but just wondered if anyone else has any experience of this with them.

Thanks

They insured me with a ban and 9 points including for the dreaded IN10 which is now thankfully spent. They are more forgiving than most due to their, if you crash drunk you front the bill policy. I would say ring for a quote and see.

Are you sure they accept NCD up to 3 years since the last policy? I understood they, like most insurers, only allow 2 years, and the Admiral website says this:

“How long do no claims bonuses last?
A no claims bonus or no claims discount is usually valid for two years after a policy comes to an end. After such time you'll need to build a new no claims bonus.”
I would have thought that if the did allow 3 years they would be trumpeting this on their website…..

Does anyone actually know of companies, that allow a no claims bonus after 3 years ??? as it looks like I wont be getting my licence back within the 2 year period....

Yep, pretty sure it's 3 years if it's an Admiral NCD and you go back to them. I did read it somewhere but can't find the link just now. I'll keep checking.

I knew I'd seen the 3 years somewhere. When you get a quote directly from the Admiral Website, you eventually arrive at the following statement re NCD.

You will go all the way through and won't get a quote from them online (they ask you to call,) but if I am reading this correctly it says NCD earned within the last 3 years.

Well it is there in black and white, this may help a lot of people with what they thought was an expired NCD!

It is slightly confusing as elsewhere on there website, they do talk about NCD earned within the last 2 years, but as you say, when getting a quote they specifically say 3 years.

Luna. Everyone. I'm new here and a veteran of the insurance broking community. Don't waste your time with Admiral. It pays "record" dividends for shareholders... They exclude cover for own damage where accidents are caused by drink driving offenders.

You need a good insurance broker. A good broker will have access to insurers that will happily listen to your unique circumstances (old ncd due to ban). A Plan is a good option. There are many! And most of them won't provide insurers that exclude cover for drink drive crashes.
I mean. You'd expect your insurer to cover your fault accident if you were speeding at the time, right?
We're humans. We make mistakes.

What an obvious shill account.

A plan was 5 times more expensive than Admiral for me, after being caught drink driving I have no issue with there being no cover for drink drive crashes (in reality there is third party cover just the DD is on the hook for the recovery of it) because I like many other posters on this forum will never be drink driving again. So the appeal of being covered in the event of being over the limit is redundant. You can't drink drive if you don't drink anymore, like myself, Luna and countless other posters here.

I suspect you are the paid shill. Just logged in post 9am? Do you work for the insurer within their pr machine?
People make mistakes. And yes. They need to be made aware that there is no cover with this insurer before they make this type of mistake.
Just look at this:
RED Driving School commissioned independent research among 1000 young people aged between 17 and 24, which highlighted shocking gaps in education and young driver awareness of the drink driving issue.

  • 79 per cent of young people do not know the legal drink drive limit.
  • One third of young people have witnessed their parents drive following the consumption of alcohol.
  • One in five young people would never plan to drink and drive but say that sometimes the unexpected does happen.
How many young people insured with admiral are aware of the drink drive clause?

Yes. I suspect you are the shill.

Away and shower your head, I've been posting here for 3 years since I was caught drink driving in 2018. Spend a small amount of time now a week helping people in the same position as me, I'm not insured with admiral anymore, I'm with sterling who beat them by nearly £300.

I logged in post 9am as I was sitting waiting for my 9:30am lecture to start. If you read anything, at all, in my recent posts you'd know I'm a student. You made an account, first post you're pushing an insurance company, do you think people are stupid?

Grice96 has been a poster on here who has consistently provided quality advice and been up front about his circumstances, both in relation to alcohol and the drink drive conviction.
You are way out of order making accusations that he has an agenda about insurance and I agree that your post is the one that looks like a poor attempt at pushing A-Plan…. But I do admit that they have offered some good advice on here, perhaps you are a replacement poster for the usual guy… If so, reading up some of the posts on here in the past few months will give you a better idea of how useful some posters are… (hint : most of them)

As car insurance brokers, we get to see the clients who have unfortunately fallen foul of admiral's drink drive clause. The clause is rare in the motor insurance industry. It's also something we highlight to our customers prior to purchasing insurance.
In my experience, I've not yet spoken with a customer who has consciously known of the admiral drink drive clause prior to the accident event.

Grice. I wonder how many of the posters on here were aware of the admiral drink drive clause prior to their accident?

That's the point here. Forget plugging insurance brokers. It's about informing and treating customers fairly.

Is the admiral drink drive clause highlighted to those customers?

Do I take it from your post that you ARE from A-plan? If so, then I think you fall foul of promoting a business on here which I believe is not allowed in posts. It is not something that the other person from A-plan who has just always posted factual information, and under the A-plan banner.

You will see that my name shows my association with TTC, but I do not try to ‘sell’ the company, I provide factual information About the Drink drive Rehabilitation courses, recognising there are other providers, and give information on a wide variety of legal issues.

No. Don't work for A plan. You're missing the point.

There's a lot of hostility here. Which is surprising and interesting at the same time.

I'm here to understand how many customers are consciously aware of the admiral drink drive clause prior to purchasing the policy?

We do see the customers forced to navigate difficult financial situations following an accident where they are cornered by admiral's drink drive clause. A clause buried inside the policy document wording. Is it highlighted to those customers prior to policy sale?

I do not disagree with your sentiment about people being Ill informed about exclusions in insurance policies, but if you are in the broker industry you will be aware that the exclusion clause for drunk driving does not just apply to
admiral, it applies to The whole of the “elephant group” that sell policies under Different Names and also to other insurance companies that I have seen reported on here where people have faced the same problem.
Sadly many people do not read hardly any of their policy details, let Alone the exclusions and even think that commuting covers business use for example.
I have advocated that people do speak to a broker on here before, when circumstances indicate that specialist advice will produce better results.

I still find it puzzling that you admit you work in the broker industry, post about A-plan and how good they are but deny working for them. Does your boss know you are promoting a rival?

That's an interesting post. Did you know that there's an elephant insurance product that is in fact part of admiral insurance?

Also. What's my boss got to do with this????

Please feel free to answer my question. You're obfuscating.

You are correct, my bad about calling it elephant group, the correct title is the Admiral Group, which consists of: Admiral, Bell, Diamond and elephant.co.uk. If you asked people if they were with Admiral, I suspect many would say “No, I am with Diamond, I am with Elephant…..etc.” they would not recognise the connection.
Zurich insurance,Ageas, Swindon, Tesco Insurance, Trinity Lane, Royal and Sun Alliance, Go Skippy, Sabre, Liverpool Victoria (under a clause of a duty to take reasonable care of the vehicle), Calpe, Advantage and Allianz also have the same drink drive exclusion to name but (quite) a few. So that is 16 companies that I can name who exclude cover for the ‘insured ‘ vehicle in the event of drink driving.

I am not at odds with what you are saying about the need for the drink drive exclusion to be made much clearer, but the information is there, the problem is persuading people to read what they are signing up to, rather than just looking at the price.

Go Compare even highlight this possible exclusion on their website:

“4. Your insurance is invalid if you drink and drive

It depends. Your car insurance won't necessarily be invalid if you're drink driving. However, if you've been in an accident whilst driving under the influence, your insurance company could refuse to pay out for your repairs or injury claims.

Under the Road Traffic Act, insurers must meet the costs of any claim by a third party for injury or damage. Be warned though - the insurer’s entitled to claim these costs back from you.

Most insurance policies will have a drink and drug driving clause. Make sure you check your policy documents to find out what you're covered for.”

As to your question about your boss…… I thought that was perfectly obvious. You single out A_Plan as a good broker, admit to working in the insurance broker industry but deny you work for A-Plan.
I know what would happen if my boss read a post from my managing director on here singling out how good Aquarius Drive (another drink drive provider) are at running courses. They may well be good at their job, but it is not for me to promote them.
