Convicted Driver Insurance

Firstly, a big thanks to all on this site for the wisdom, encouragement and lack of foreboding. Like everyone, I have a 'story' behind the reasons leading to my conviction, but I won't go into. In drink induced blackout, drove 10 miles and sideswiped another car on a busy bypass. Drove to next exit as I believe I didn't want to stop on dual carriageway notorious for accidents. Other driver pulled in front of me as thought I was driving off. Pretty obvious I had been drinking, 1/2 bottle of vodka empty on passenger seat, slurring and obviously stank of the stuff. Anyhoo, arrested, blew 133 at station. Night in cells, next day told reporting for not stopping at an accident as well as drink driving. 3 weeks later, in court (with Solicitor as looked at this forum and saw potential jail term from guidelines). CPS dropped the not stop after consulting with my Solicitor. He also did a really good speech about my regret, remorse, out of character etc. Adjourned for pre-sentence reports, was seen within an hour by probation service. Back to magistrates that afternoon, given 12 week prison sentence - suspended for 12 months. No fine (lost job as result of admitting to employer), 12 months probation, 16 week DIDS course + Driver awareness course and 32 month ban (-25% for course).

That was 2 years ago. My ban was up in May. 12 weeks prior, got forms through from DVLA. As no passport, had to apply for my birth certificate for proof of ID. That took 6 weeks, when received sent forms to DVLA. Another 3 weeks and received letter about seeing doctor for medical. Called doctor that they told me to go to, was told that the doctor was busy and the first appointment would be in 6 weeks!!! I wasn't impressed with this so called DVLA, they were really helpful and gave me a few other doctors (albeit a bit further afield) who I called. One had a space 2 days later, had to call DVLA to get them to fax forms through - which they did the same day!

At medical, filled in all forms, answered as honestly as possible, few tweaks to not look like a complete problem case (I had previously had drink issues as a self medication but had since got things a bit more under control - Try AA and just listen to other peoples stories, it helped me no end. No pressure to spill your heart out, but you can if you want).

2 1/2 weeks after medical, received letter from DVLA saying referred to GP. Booked to see my GP (this week) but is now another month after my official ban ended.

Getting to my question, does anyone know why I would have been referred to GP? I am still drinking, however it is far less (both in volume and frequency) and prior to medical, I didn't drink at all for 3 weeks. My GP isn't the friendliest person so unsure if she will let me know what she has told DVLA/what they wanted.

Tree is a good chance that the referral to your doctor is because of the CDT result from your blood sample. Below 2.3% is generally OK, above 2.9% is strongly indicative of alcohol dependency, and will probably result in a fail. In the 'grey' area in between DVLA usually check with your doctor about any concerns they have, and if you have consulted them in the past 2-3 years for any alcohol related problems.

Thanks. I did see my GP about 18 months ago re:alcohol issue, she was like "..have 2 or 3 days free of alcohol to let your body repair" rather than stop/refer to specialist etc. Suppose I can't influence anything and just go with the flow. In a much better place than I was 2 years ago so suppose not driving for a bit longer isn't the end of the world considering....
