Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me where people get their cheaper solicitors from, I have seen on the sentencing thread people saying they paid around £250. I got a quote yesterday for going to court with my son and putting forward his mitigation of £800 this seems a bit steep to me or is that normal? It is a straightforward guilty plea .

Hi, not sure if you still need advice as I can see your post was a couple of months ago...

I was arrested for 'drunk in charge' back in April. I rang around several law firms (mostly specialising in criminal/motoring offences) and was generally quoted in the region of £800 + vat for a solicitor to guide you through a guilty plea (this would be a lot more for not guilty as would have to go to trial). I also enquired about just paying for an hour or two of a solicitor's time just to ask questions and get some guidance before going to court and was quoted between £75 - £400 + vat so this type of thing may have been what people were referring to?

I couldn't really afford any help at all in the end - I went to court today and was represented by the duty solicitor who was brilliant and I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I would highly recommend writing a character reference for your son, getting others to do so and for him to write an apology letter to the magistrate accepting responsibility & showing remorse - this is what I did today and I think it was very beneficial. Good luck!
