i have been shopping around for ins after my ban online through money supermarket got a quote for £475 told them all about my ban etc then i phoned a specialist insurer that deals with convicted drivers and they quoted me £1000 when i asked about this he told me that if you buy online they treat you as if your licence is clean even if you have told them about being banned now that confuses me is this a case of the specialist insurers fibbing just to get more cash out of us or are the online people breaking the law?

All insurance companies who sell insurance policies are regulated by the FSA. As long as you tell them all material facts when asked and be truthful then the quote should be accurate. I would always advise people when comparing quotes online to actually call the company after obtaining an online quote to run through and confirm all relevant details before purchase.

I cannot see how they treat you as if you have a clean licence after declaring disqualifications and/or endorsements as they specifically ask you about convictions, claims etc. and this will be reflected in the premium you pay for your insurance policy.

+1,
I suspect that what happened was that they did not give you a 'quote', but rather a price indication to get themselves high up on the list of prices. Usually there is a rider under the 'more details' saying that you have to contact them for a firm quote, that is when they hit you with a real price.....
As the Mod says, you need to talk to someone, not just rely on an auto system. Even if there was a glitch in them preparing the price automatically, there will at some point be a page where it confirms your details that you have given about yourself, the car and your licence, and you click to agree that the details are correct, which would void the cover you were buying .
