Waiting on results of blood test

My partner was involved in an RTA a week ago when his car skidded and hit an ongoing vehicle. He is badly injured and still in hospital but thankfully the occupants in the other car walked out. The accident happened around 7pm. We had a late Sunday lunch, around 4pm and he had a pint afterwards, when he came home he had half a glass if wine. He was breathalysed in the hospital around 10:30pm and found to be almost twice over the drink driving limit. A doctor was called and he took a blood test around 11:30pm. We were absolutely shocked to be told he was over the dd limit. In most cases are r handheld breathalysers relatively accurate and is it highly unlikely that the blood test would reduce substantially? Thanks in advance.

With that timescale, if the hand held breath test was correct, I would have expected your husband to have had a pint of beer and a BOTTLE of wine.
The hand held breath tests are an INDICATION that a person is over the limit. They are battery operated and not calibrated in the same way that the police station ones are, so it may be that this machine was not reading accurately, only the blood result will tell.
It is not clear from what you tell us if the glass of wine (when he got home) was drunk after the accident, if it was, did your husband tell the police that he had some wine when he got home? Did you see him drink it?
Was your husband offered a part of the blood sample? He could get that analysed which will give a quicker result, but it costs in the region of £100 to get that done.
